Six autumn gardening tips

The winter is fast approaching and there is no better time to take that one last effort to make sure your garden is on the right track for a healthy winter.

Here is our take on some quick tips to get your garden thriving thru the winter season.

1) REMOVE LEFTOVER WEEDS / DEAD LEAVES

There may some weeds left here and there. Don't let them be as they might hibernate and grow back in summer. It’s a good idea to uproot them using digging or weeding devices

There will be plenty of dead leaves around, don't throw them away, why not start your own compost bin, a win-win proposition perhaps!

2) TRIM HEDGES & PRUNE PLANTS

Give your hedges one last trim before the winter sets in. They usually slow down their growing phase in winter months, but they still grow! So, give them a quick trim and revisit them during spring season.

Same applies to plants as well. Get rid of those dry branches and loose leaves. Use quality pruning tool as a cleaner cut vastly improves the health of your plant compared to poor serrated cuts!

3) PLANT VEGGIES, TREES, SHRUBS and PERENNIALS

Now is the time to get your hands dirty! Start digging and plant your favourite flower bulbs and veggies. The soil will still have its warmth and it's not fully cold, which makes it a perfect time to plant to bulbs and veggies. They will start to spring out of the ground, well, right on spring!

4) DEFINITELY FERTILISE

When planting new bulbs and veggies, it's a good idea to prepare the soil with a bit a organic fertilisers to kick start the growth. Choose a balanced fertiliser that contains phosphorous, nitrogen, potassium, and calcium. Your budding plants needs these to be resilient to generic diseases and fungus.

5) TAKE CARE OF YOUR LAWN

Prepare your lawn for colder months. Like all living plants, they too slow down their growth during colder months. An overgrown lawn left out in the cold weather may attract or absorb more moisture and may rot due to lack of sun and heat. So, mowing the grass right before winter will allow your lawn to manage itself much better.

6) CHECK ON YOUR ROSES

When it comes to Roses everything is tricky! Give them a light pruning, removing dried branches and leaves. Prune the dead flower heads. Give it a quality rose fertiliser dosage as roses are susceptible to diseases and a right balanced rose fertiliser may help it prevent these diseases.

7) MULCH EVERYTHING

Get busy during following weekends and order loads of mulch. It helps to supress weed growth and retains moisture and helps to maintain an overall healthy soil.
